NWA Veterans Start Community Garden to Inspire Other Vets

SPRINGDALE, Ark. (KNWA) - Two Northwest Arkansas veterans are changing the lives of vets and our community one head of lettuce at a time.

Jerry Martin is a veteran and a farmer, but not just any kind of farmer.

Martin said,  "I'm a Vietnam Veteran. I went into service in 1969. "

The goal is to provide fresh farm to table vegetables for the Northwest Arkansas community. "Vet Veggies is a concept where we provide fresh local vegetables," said Martin.

Martin and his team want to help veterans across the country get out of the office and into the dirt. Martin said,  "So many Veterans now get out and accept a job that a head hunter's found for them and a lot of times that's not a pair of shoes that fits them."

Vet Veggies harvests 600 heads of lettuce every week using a process called Hydroponics and they do it all inside this single container.

Alan Altom is the VP of Sales and Marketing for Vet Veggies. He is also a veteran. He said, "There's so much that goes into it especially in a container. With the air circulation, the right nutrients. "

The hope is to provide jobs for vets all across the country so they can also start their own veggie business.

Altom said, "We feel that there are many veterans out there that this could be a great fit for. They can feed that entrepreneurial spirit with and they can become involved with their local communities."

Though the way vet veggies  grows the fresh vegetables may not be traditional, the reward is just as fulfilling and economically friendly.

"Starting something with a seed and raising it up through maturity. It's very rewarding if you will," Martin said.

You can find Vet Veggies in some of your favorite Northwest Arkansas restaurants like Mermaids, The Springdale Country Club and Mockingbird.
