Northwest Arkansas Family Welcomes Adopted Ugandan Children

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (KNWA) - For one Northwest Arkansas family, the wait is over after a year-long battle to bring their adopted son and daughter home from Africa. Doug and Brooke Waller have worked tirelessly to bring their two children home from Uganda. On Thursday, the family celebrated Rose and Joseph's arrival with friends and family.

"We had to leave him behind and say we'll be back, and that was the toughest departure we had of all the trips we made," said Doug about leaving his adopted children and coming back to the U.S. without them.

The Wallers already have a happy family with two children they adopted, but for the last year they've seen more roadblocks than they ever imagined when trying to bring Rose and Joseph home.

We keep reminding ourselves, we will not leave our children behind. And even though we have to leave them for a flight, we will not leave them for a lifetime," added Brooke.

The Waller's ran into a long appeals process with U.S. Immigration services after finding out the children's parents were still alive but were willing to turn over their rights. Friends and family stood by the Waller's side helping them raise money for the homecoming.

Tabitha Bottoms is one of the Waller's friends who has supported the family along the way. She said, "We've loved on them, we've cared for them, and to finally see today come is just a huge answer to prayer."

After a long awaited process and seeing their final appeal approved, the family of four turned into a family of six. Friends and family held up welcome signs at the airport for the new arrivals.

"We are so grateful for everyone who's supported us. Who's helped us along the way, who sent an email or called a friend, and that support has been unique and the persistence has been one of a kind," said Brooke.

The family said all the hard work to have their loved ones in their arms has finally paid off.

"It's so great to finally come home and come down the escalator at XNA and say this is your home. This is your family and you're home," said Doug.
