NLR Student Thankful for College Education

NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - With Thanksgiving coming up next week, students across the state are wrapping up exams before they're off for the holiday.

One student at UA Pulaski Tech says she has more to be thankful for this holiday season than ever before.

When Kendal Covington walks into the computer lab, there's just one thing that separates her from Thanksgiving break.

"I have a biology project due tomorrow, actually a 7-10 page essay about endangered species," she says.

And while she's anxious to finish her paper, she says she's happy to do it.

At one point in her life, Kendal says college was not in the picture.

"I got mixed in with the wrong crowd outside of school and experimented with drugs and alcohol," she explains.

That landed her in prison, for 14 months.

"Just sitting in a jail cell for a day will get you thinking about what you did wrong," Kendal says.

Realizing that wasn't what she wanted, Kendal spent her time learning and making goals. Now, at 23-years-old, she's fulfilling them.

"This is my first semester back at school. I have all A's. I'm very appreciative of the opportunity Pulaski Tech gave me.

But it wasn't without the help of Goodwill Industries and UA Pulaski Tech.

"Life is complicated and life is challenging and sometimes when life happens college takes a back seat," says Tim Jones, Public Relations for UA Pulaski Tech.

Jones says the school wants to help students like Kendal realize their potential and understand that sometimes there are bumps in the road.

"Finishing and ensuring these students go on to better jobs and more secure lives is what we are all about," he adds.

So, while Kendal wraps her paper...

"I'm almost done with it. I'm six pages deep right now," she says.

...and leaves the computer lab, she's opening the door knowing she has a whole lot to be thankful for this year.

Kendal says her goals now are to transfer to a four-year university and possibly double major.

She says she feels her purpose now is to inspire others who have gone down the wrong path to show them they can do it too.
