NEWPORT, Ark. - A local teen accused in the shooting death of a police officer Monday night has been ordered held without bond.
Tyler Calamese, 18, appeared in Newport District Court Wednesday morning. He is being represented by public defenders.
Calamese is charged with Capital Murder in the death of Newport Police Department Lt. Patrick Weatherford, 41.
An Arkansas State Police investigator testified at the hearing and told the court that during interrogation, Calamese admitted to firing the shot that killed Weatherford. The investigator also testified that autopsy results from the State Crime Lab confirmed the officer died from a gunshot wound to the heart.
A memorial fund has been established for Lt. Weatherford's family. Donations can be made at the Merchants & Planters Bank and Iberia Bank locations in Newport.
