MCRAE, Ark.- A White county man is begging for some thieves to have a heart.
"It was a crime of opportunity," says Bob McIlroy whose truck was broken into while it was broken down Monday morning.
He was driving down Highway 267 when his car ran out of gas. He left it on the side of the road while he went to see if anyone could help.
He was gone ten minutes. On his way back he noticed something was wrong.
"The passenger door of my truck was open," says McIlroy.
Thieves stole a small rifle, some arrows and a cane from his vehicle.
The cane was a gift his son, Dustin had commissioned to be made for his father at a blacksmith convention the family goes to every year in Ohio.
It's become a family tradition.
"I just really hate it that it's gone," says McIlroy.
The roadside burglary comes less than a week after the family got some distressing news.
" Dad got a diagnosis Thursday," says Dustin. "It's not conclusive but they said it's a 90% chance he has cancer."
The family has been on an emotional roller coaster since then.
"You know you think about all the what ifs," says Dustin. "What if we don't get to go back on the trip to Ohio... what if that was the last trip we'd ever take?"
He's asking for the thief to return what was forged in fire so the memories they have won't only be forged in their minds.
You can return it to the White County Sheriff's office, no questions asked. McIlroy says he's even offering a $75 reward.
