Grandmother, 81, Beaten & Robbed at Pine Bluff Home

Doorbell Camera Records Suspect Entering House

PINE BLUFF, Ark. - A local grandmother is recovering after being beaten and robbed in her home earlier this week.

The Pine Bluff Police Department says a 17-year-old boy has been arrested in the case involving an 81-year-old victim. His name is not yet being released but officials say he is expected to be charged as an adult.

Neighbors living near Edgewood Drive in Pine Bluff, are on edge.

"What happened to her is a crime," says Patsy Bass, a friend of the 81-year-old victim. "When I heard about it yesterday all I could do is cry and call my brothers."

"She heard a knock or doorbell which led her to answer the door," says Officer Richard Wegner with Pine Bluff Police.

That's when police say a 17-year old - armed with a long hand gun - pushed his way inside.

"At some point he began thrusting her with that weapon, causing several injuries including a fracture to her orbital socket, right around her eye," says Wegner.

Surveillance footage at the home shows the suspect walking up to the grandmother's door with the weapon [see video attached below].

Police say the teen demanded cash - forcing the woman to write a check.

"There was an attempted rape involved in this before the suspect fled," says Wegner.

Investigators were able to track down the teen -- who they say confessed to the crime.

"We believe this victim was targeted possibly because she is helpful in the neighborhood," says Wegner. "We believe this suspect targeted her because he had dealt with her before."

Now, friends of the victim are thankful she's still alive.

"There's not a person, and I've lived here a long time, that will have one bad word to say about this woman," says Bass.

And her neighbors promise to keep a look out - to help prevent something like this from happening again.

"We look out for each other, all the women who live there, and wouldn't hesitate to help at a moments notice," says Bass.

The teen is charged with Criminal Attempt Aggravated Rape, Aggravated Residential Burglary, Aggravated Robbery, and 1st Degree Battery.
