Free GED Classes Open Doors for Students

Benjamin-Joseph Jones has big dreams.

He's hoping to go to college, and become a game programmer.

But there's one thing holding him back. He doesn't have a high school diploma, or GED.

"Something personal family wise I had to take care of," said Jones.

Jones said he was unable to finish high school. But thanks to Pulaski Technical College, he's able to take GED prep classes for free, to help him reach that milestone.

"To further my goals and pursue education in order to move on in life and achieve my end goal," said Jones.

Pulaski Tech has partnered with the Little Rock and Pulaski County Special School Districts to staff adult education centers at two locations.

"My philosophy of education is if I help the parents they will help the children," said lead instructor Karen Kennedy.

Kennedy began teaching adults in 1994, and said this is a great opportunity.

"In order to meet the employers need they need a more educated workforce," said Kennedy.

She added the GED exam is much harder than it used to be, and these prep classes are crucial to a student's success.

Kennedy said, "If they pass the test they can pass the test for college."

So in between the lessons on the computer and books, Jones is confident he will reach his dreams,  "It's best to take advantage for your future."

Especially with the help of the GED classes.
