Fort Smith Neurosurgeon Arrested in Child Sex Abuse Case

FORT SMITH, Ark. - A California doctor hired by Sparks Neuroscience Center in Fort Smith has officially been charged.

James Kohut and two nurses are accused of raping children younger than 10 years old.

The arrest warrant says Kohut had affairs with nurses Melina Brandon and Emily Joy Stephens, and at times children were sexually assaulted -- some on camera.

Brandon's husband found one of the videos and called police.

Kohut's attorney denies all charges.

"Dr. Kohut has spent his life saving people's lives. He is a renowned brain surgeon. This is not conduct that he would participate in. I think at the end of the day, the evidence will show that this is not true," Nick Cvietkovich, Dr. Kohut's attorney, said.

Police believe a total of seven children were sexually assaulted. All three suspects worked in hospitals, but police found no evidence any crimes occurred in a medical facility. They are facing life in prison if convicted.
