DEWITT, Ark. - A former coach and teacher in a small town in Arkansas has been arrested. The DeWitt native is accused of sex crimes.
Clay McKewen was arrested Monday for 1st degree sexual assault. School documents show he was a teacher for about three years before he resigned late last year.
The small community of DeWitt has been rocked by the recent arrest of Clay McKewen.
"It's never something we hear of around here."
One mother, only speaking to us anonymously, says McKewen taught her kids recently.
"In my opinion, I thought he was a great teacher and a great coach. I've never heard a bad word about him until now," she said.
According to school documents, McKewen was hired in 2013 as a high school math teacher. People in DeWitt say he was also a football coach.
He was booked into jail Monday facing 6 counts of 1st degree of sexual assault charges. The bench warrant says the alleged offenses happened between November 2nd-November 26th 2016.
More school documents show he resigned from his teaching position in December 2016.
As the community tries to understand the charges McKewen is facing, one mom says she still has questions as to what happened.
"I have kids in this school and the thought, it breaks my heart," she said.
At this point, it's unclear who the victim is in this case.
The Arkansas County Judge's Office says McKewen will be seen in court at a later date. He has since bonded out of jail.
