Education Matters: Reading Road Trip Bus

CABOT, Ark. - The Reading Road Trip Bus is traveling around the Cabot School District through July 28.

It allows children and their families to check out books and get in some summer reading.

"We have such a huge selection and it's so wide range. It definitely inspires kids to pick up a book over the summer," says LeeAnn Reed, Media Specialist.

It's essentially a library on wheels.

Kids like Griffin get excited when they see it on the road. Reading is his favorite thing to do.

"I like, kinda like the pictures," he says.

When we caught up with Griffin, it was his second time on board the Reading Road Trip bus.

"I wanted a Batman one but they didn't have it, so I found that one," he says.

But when it does come time for searching for the right book, Griffin knows which ones are a good read,

"Hey, I can tell that's a good book, because look that means that's a good book," he continues."

The Cabot Bookmobile offers books to children of all ages and adults too. Since it first hit the road four years ago, about 25-thousand books have been checked out.

The bookmobile makes stops throughout Cabot. You'll find it in places like the movie theater, apartment complexes, the Cabot Aquatic Center, and schools, to help promote reading during the summer months.

"Books are provided solely through donations from our community and students," explains Reed.

The bookmobile operates through an honor system, giving parents peace of mind knowing they won't be charged for a late or damaged book.

In the meantime, educators hope people will keep donating on a regular basis so the Reading Road Trip bus can provide a fun and unique outlet for kids to check out a book.
