Helena, AR -- The Delta Cultural Center has opened a new exhibit, long in the making, called "Songs from the Field."

It tells the story of the evolution of the music we historically associate with the slavery and then the sharecropping era of the Arkansas and Mississippi River Delta – blues, spirituals, gospel, and rhythm and blues.

This is the story of the human spirit in the time leading up to the Civil War and in the years following, of how those of African descent in Arkansas enslaved largely in the production of cotton used music – one of the few possessions difficult to deny them – to cope and transcend their oppression.
