Decorating for Holiday Housing Market

While it’s currently the season to decorate your house for the holidays, some families are in the process of selling their homes.

Decorating the home can be the icing on the cake for a potential buyer, showing them what the house can look like during this exciting time of the year.

Showhomes representatives Dana and Mark Baggett give tips on what to do and not do in terms of decorating your home with plans to sell around the holidays.

  1. Avoid over decorating and keep things very very simple. A garland and clear lights on the mantle or stairway are a nice, clean look. A tree is fine if it does not overwhelm the space.

  2. Avoid huge collections of items as this makes things too personal. If you have enough village pieces to set up an entire city, great. Keep these items in their boxes and save displaying for your new home.

  3. Avoid scents that are plugged in and instead opt for scents that can be hidden in small vases or bowls that serve as odor neutralizers without overpowering the space. If time allows, bake cookies or boil cinnamon sticks in water just before the showing.

  4. Use colors to enhance the space, but stick to earth tones, creams and golds. If the room is neutral, feel free to use touches of red or green or blue for Hanukkah in moderation. Keep the room simple and elegant.

  5. Tuck gifts deep in your closet and avoid wrapping expensive gifts and putting them under the tree. Wrap a few larger, less expensive gifts in solid paper with a beautiful ribbon on them.

  6. Make sure all decorations are seasonal. I.e. don't have a tree up in January or pumpkins up in December.
