Little Rock, Arkansas - LITTLE ROCK, AR -- Lena Jordan was born in Georgia on April 6th 1884 but moved to Little Rock in the 1920s and began her career as a registered nurse at the Mosaic Templars Hospital. In the 1930s the AR Home and Hospital for Crippled Negro Children was in danger of closing. When no one stepped forward to help meet the hospital's mortgage Jordan mortgaged her own home to keep the hospital open. It was later named the Lena Jordan Hospital and was open to all black patients regardless of their ability to pay. Physicians, both black and white, donated their time and talent for charity patients. Jordan went on to train and educate nurses and open up worlds of opportunity for those who otherwise might not have much. Lena Jordan passed away on September 30, 1950. There's no telling how many Arkansas families even exist today because of the selfless, sacrificial heroism of this great Arkansan.
