JEFFERSON COUNTY, AR -- Neighbors in a Jefferson County community are banned from fishing in a nearby bayou until the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality gets clean water samples.
Flat Bayou, which is located in Altheimer, is where dozens of fishermen fill the banks searching for catfish and bass, but the peaceful pastime has been interrupted for safety.
Environmental response crews have been out cleaning the body of water after health leaders said a company dumped debris covered in old diesel into the bayou. It doesn't appear to have negative effects on humans, but leaders have been urged fishermen not to eat the fish from the bayou until clear water samples come back.
The mayor calls this a setback for all who flock to the community to fish.
"We're hoping some relief can be done and some answers any day so folks can get back. I hope this doesn't scare them off for good," said Mayor Donald Robinson.
ADEQ leaders said they don't know when those samples will be back.
