If you’re one of those people who really likes to be scared at Halloween, here’s a scary fact: zombies may be very close to you. Dr. Bryan Dunlap of Dunlap Dental joined us with frightful info about actual zombies in your mouth.
1. Teeth can be dead and still live…in your mouth Like many other parts of our bodies, our teeth have tiny blood vessels and nerves. When blood doesn't’t flow to them, because of injury or disease, they die but can remain in the mouth for a long time.
2. Zombie teeth can be hard to recognize Looks can be deceiving. A zombie tooth can look normal to the untrained eye, which is another reason why regular dental checkups are so important. Some symptoms are pain and a change in the tooth’s color, but many zombie teeth appear to be like their normal neighbors.
3. Zombie teeth eat your brains Well, not literally eat your brains. But dead teeth can cause infection and be a way for the bacteria that’s already in your mouth to make you very sick.
4. Your dentist can kill the zombie teeth If one or several of your teeth are dead or dying, an x-ray will help spot it. Early treatment can bring life back to a sick tooth. Dead teeth may have to be pulled or have a root canal. Your dentist is the best defense against zombie teeth!
