American Red Cross in Critical Need of Blood Donations

LITTLE ROCK, AR - Blood bags like this one are harder to come by in the summer.

"Because folks are on vacation schools are out. We do a lot of blood drives on high school and college campuses and we don't do as many of those in the summer," says Danielle.

Danielle Ray with the American Red Cross encourages people to schedule a donation time in the next couple months.

"The key is the patients that need the blood don't get to take a summer vacation."

But Karen Laurence doesn't let vacation stand in the way of doing her duty.

"I've had family members who have had cancer and leukemia," says Laurence.

She donated blood over the weekend at the American Taekwondo Association Tournament

"I feel like I've given a part of me to somebody else."

Karen knows first hand the importance of donating.

In 2006, her husband died of leukemia.

"And closer towards the end he had to have several pints of blood given in order to keep him going," says Laurence.

While watching dozens of people giving the gift of life Karen says things come full circle for her.

"If we don't give the blood then those people aren't going to have the chances that they deserve in order to live a good life."

It's a life that you could help to save too,

"We provide about 40% of the nation's blood supply."

by rolling up your sleeve,

"I think it's fantastic."

and offering something that's priceless.
