On Tuesday, August 26, at 7:00 PM The William F. Laman Public Library (2801 Orange Street, North Little Rock) will host Former Arkansas Congressman Ed Bethune as he discusses his latest book, Gay Panic in the Ozarks. Wounds and prejudices stemming from the Civil War, the Great Depression and other conflicts run deep in the Ozark hill country. These frailties, like the scab of a putrid wound, will from time to time reopen and ooze pus. In the tumultuous year of 1968, a farmer stumbles onto the gruesome scene of a hate crime: the lynching of a young gay man whose mangled body has been left hanging from a tree. Clues abound, but the investigation withers and dies. Thirty-eight years later, Aubrey Hatfield and the citizens of Campbell County get a second chance to grapple with man's greatest vice-the refusal to see wrong and do something about it. The life journey of protagonist Aubrey Hatfield contrasts the culture of the turbulent Sixties with today's culture, and ponders how we should adapt to or resist the ever-changing notions of right and wrong. Thus, Gay Panic in the Ozarks is a disturbing story of the culture war that society is waging on itself. Brusque but humane, the novel examines love, hate, morality, honor, and duty-the things that inform and shape our destiny.

Little Rock's largest interchange is changing again. Lanes will be closing here over the next month overnight in order for workers to complete some minor work. During that time they will be painting the bridges, beams and travel lanes. as well as removing the wooden decking and safety platforms under some of the completed overpasses. Once that work is done, three parts of the interchange will open including the fly-over for 430 North and 630 East, an access road near Baptist Hospital and the Shakleford Road Overpass. Randy Ort from the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department commented on the changes, "That will put traffic in a new area, it will allow us to take out some of the temporary pavement that's been in place that's had to handle traffic through the construction." According to Highway and Transportation Officials, that work will be completed in the next two the three months. Officials say the interchange is a balance between safety and mobility and will be easier to navigate. The entire project is expected to be done in eight months.

In the late stages of pregnancy, you're waiting on pins and needles for the moment when labor begins. And, in fact, so is your OB/GYN. Despite giving you a due date, your doctor can't predict exactly when your baby will arrive. While your doctor may want to be present for your labor and delivery, that isn't always possible. Enter the laborist. A laborist is an OB/GYN who specializes in caring for women in labor and delivering babies. The laborist works on site at the hospital, devoting his or her full attention to any woman who arrives in labor. Once a patient is admitted, the laborist is responsible for her care through delivery of her baby or until the patient's personal doctor arrives. The advantage of having laborists at a hospital is that a fully trained, well-rested obstetrician is physically available 24 hours a day. Laborists don't have to juggle a busy office schedule with on-call obligations. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists asserts that this model enhances patient safety and leads to better outcomes for mother and baby. Laborists are used on a voluntary basis; a patient and her personal doctor can decide whether to turn care over to a laborist. Many women develop a personal, trusting relationship with their OB/GYN and may be uncomfortable with the prospect of seeing a different doctor while they're in the hospital. In this case, the patient should talk to her doctor about having the laborist provide progress updates so he or she and can seamlessly turn care over when the personal doctor arrives. A laborist can be a key member of a woman's health care team when that long-awaited moment arrives: The baby is coming!
